Same Wi-Fi

The default route. The phone finds the PC with a UDP broadcast and connects directly.

Fits when the phones and the PC are on the same router. Does not fit when the phones leave the building, or the network isolates devices from each other (many guest and office networks do).

How it works

The phone broadcasts a short question on UDP port 8778. Every Droidline server on the network that the phone is paired with answers with its port, and the phone connects to TCP port 8779. The QR code also carries the PC's private addresses, so a phone on a network that blocks broadcasts can still connect directly.

Nothing to configure. If it does not connect:

  • Windows firewall. The first time droidline serve runs, allow it on private networks. If you clicked away the prompt, allow droidline.exe for inbound TCP 8779 and UDP 8778 in Windows Defender Firewall.
  • The Wi-Fi network is marked Public on Windows. Change it to Private, or add the firewall rules for public networks.
  • Client isolation. Guest networks and some mesh systems stop devices from seeing each other. Use the main network, or another method.
  • Different subnets or VLANs. Broadcasts do not cross them. Pair with the QR code, which contains the PC's address, and make sure the phone's network can reach that address.
  • A VPN on the PC can take over the network interface. Pause it or allow local network access.
